Name: The Balvenie 17 Peated Cask

Overall Character: Simple light peat and mild mushrooms

Recommended Drinker: This is quite pricy so it’s mostly for collectors and Balvenie fans, especially since the peated variety is pretty uncommon. Still, a great choice at a bar if you find it. Also good to take to a party to stand out from Islay peated malts.

Name: The Balvenie 12 Single Barrel

Overall Character: Sweet honey and citrusy oak

Recommended Drinker: Even bourbon drinkers should like this at least a bit, and of course highland and speyside drinkers who like cask strength. It may seem pricy, buy it’s a good deal in my opinion.

Name: Nikka Taketsuru 21 Pure Malt Port Wood Finish

Overall Character: Balanced smooth caramel and cherry

Recommended Drinker: If you like the standard 21 year old then you’ll love this as well. I don’t think it’s really any better per se, but that depends on your palette. I think it’s about equally good, just different. It’s obviously a must buy for collectors as well, as Nikka rarely produce special cask finished whisky.

Name: Nikka Taketsuru 17 Pure Malt

Overall Character: Sweet, yet spicy and leathery

Recommended Drinker: This is a bit of a bitter version of the 12, yet richer in flavor. So it’s not for people who like their malts sweet and fruity. It’s more for people who like bitter-sweet whisky. It’s still good for any single/blended malt drinker.
