Name: Spirit of Scotland St. Magdalene 33

Overall Character: Sweet and tart fruit pastries

Recommended Drinker: St. Magdalene bottles like these can still be reasonably priced, so get it if you want something rare, collectible, and nice to drink. Great for anyone who wants to try a flavorful lowland whisky of old-fashioned quality. It’s for the Japan market, so if you’re visiting, see if you can hunt it in the shops, or at least the bars.

Name: St. Magdalene 30 Old and Rare

Overall Character: Sweet vanilla and spices, with some other odd notes here and there.

Recommended Drinker: Best for collectors and bar patrons who can get a sample. Also nice for a rare lowland single malt, but I’d leave it at that.

Buchanan’s Red Seal (2012) 7.6

Buchanan’s Red Seal (2012)

Name: Buchanan’s Red Seal

Overall Character: A little of everything in all mild forms, from peat and nuts, to fruit and sweetness, and even some vegetable notes.

Recommended Drinker: For the price, I would personally avoid it unless it’s at a bar or a party. Still, it is a very interesting whisky, so if you have the money to spend, it’s good for most palates, and a daring whisky for single malt drinkers, though I’m sure single malt drinkers wouldn’t want to waste their time with this. If you like the other Buchanan’s blends, then this is definitely recommended.

Buchanan’s 18 Special Reserve (2012)

Name: Buchanan’s 18 Special Reserve

Overall Character: Spicy oak with some sweetness and a touch of fruit and grains

Recommended Drinker: This is more balanced and versatile than the 12 year Deluxe. Whisky drinkers of all types could at least enjoy a glass of this. It’s best for fans of Blended Scotch and mature scotches, but who don’t want to spend a fortune. There aren’t too many old age statement blends that are widely available, so it’s a good option if you’d like to try such a category. Like the 12 year, this would fit people who like the Isle of Skye blended scotch.

Name: Buchanan’s 12 Deluxe

Overall Character: Herbal grains

Recommended Drinker: This is definitely not for those who like sweeter whiskies like bourbon. It’s more for people who like scotch, especially bitter or more peat-flavored blends. It’s good if you like young Johnny Walkers or blends like Black & White, or Isle of Skye.

Yoichi 20 Nikka Single Cask Malt Whisky 1985 (2005)

Author

Name: Nikka Single Cask Malt Whisky 1985

Overall Character: Peat smoke, and nuts transform to a fruit parfait

Recommended Drinker: This was one of the first Nikka Single Casks I believe. As with most old Yoichi bottles, this is for peat freaks who want an incredible peated Japanese single malt experience. Finding bottles like this will be increasingly impossible, so snag it, even if the price is a LITTLE crazy, because it’s only going to get crazier.

Name: Yoichi 20 Whisky Live 10th Anniversary

Overall Character: Salty oceanic peat smoke and spices, and nice balanced sweetness.

Recommended Drinker: Peat and cask strength fans. This is a spicy oceanic peat. It’s for people who want a wonderful and powerful peated Japanese single malt of great quality. If you like younger bottles like Suntory’s Heavily Peated Hakushu, then this is a dream come true and on a whole new level.
