Name: Nikka Taketsuru 21 Pure Malt Port Wood Finish

Overall Character: Balanced smooth caramel and cherry

Recommended Drinker: If you like the standard 21 year old then you’ll love this as well. I don’t think it’s really any better per se, but that depends on your palette. I think it’s about equally good, just different. It’s obviously a must buy for collectors as well, as Nikka rarely produce special cask finished whisky.

Name: Nikka Taketsuru 17 Pure Malt

Overall Character: Sweet, yet spicy and leathery

Recommended Drinker: This is a bit of a bitter version of the 12, yet richer in flavor. So it’s not for people who like their malts sweet and fruity. It’s more for people who like bitter-sweet whisky. It’s still good for any single/blended malt drinker.

Name: Nikka Taketsuru 12 Pure Malt

Overall Character: Mellow fruits and sugar

Recommended Drinker: Basic Speyside Scotch drinkers and novice whisky drinkers would like this plenty. I would aim more for the individual Nikka malts (Yoichi and Miyagikyo), rather than this blend. Still it’s good for drinking straight or for highballs.

Overall Character: Smooth and light, with citrus and spice

Recommended Drinker: This is for Gentleman Jack lovers who want a little more flavor and quality without going to the Single Barrel. Most bourbon drinkers should like it, and and of course Jack Daniel fans and collectors. It has great packaging and a good story.

Name: Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Select

Overall Character: Deep rich caramel and spices

Recommended Drinker: This is the best Jack Daniel’s that you can buy easily and is readily available. If you like the Gentleman Jack, then this might be a bit too strong, but if you like rich caramel bourbon-like flavor then this is a great one, and a fairly decent price.

Name: Jack Daniel’s Gentleman Jack

Overall Character: Creamy and light, sweet and smooth

Recommended Drinker: People who like their American whiskey light and smooth. This is the smoothest of the Jack Daniel’s lineup. It’s a reasonable price, too. Don’t get it if you’re looking for a lot of flavor or excitement.
